Bangkok Surprise
“Hello, is this 5721-1251?” a woman’s voice spoke.
“Yes, that’s right, this is 5721-1251.”
“Ah, sorry for calling out of the blue. Actually, I wanted to get through to 5721-1252…”
“Huh?” I said.
“I’ve been trying to reach them this whole time - I rang about thirty times since this morning, but the call keeps failing. Um…yeah, they’re probably out or something?”
“Okay, and?” I asked.
“Oh, yes, well, I thought, maybe I’d try to dial 5721-1251, 5721-1252’s ‘number neighbor,’ so to speak.”
“Ah.”
The woman cleared her throat softly. “I actually just got back from Bangkok last night. Something reeeally amazing happened in Bangkok. Something you absolutely would not believe. Something extremely incredible. Well, I had originally planned to stay there for one week, but I ended up cutting my trip three days short and came home early. And then, I was going to tell this story to 1252. If I don’t tell someone, then there’s no way I’ll be able to sleep, but on the other hand, it’s not a story I can tell just anyone. So I thought that maybe the person at 1251 would be willing to listen to my story.”
“I see.”
“Though, I was really hoping that a woman would pick up...I thought it’d be easier to tell this kind of story to a woman.”
“Oh...sorry,” I said.
“How old are you, by the way?”
“I just turned thirty-seven last month.”
“Oh, thirty-seven. Ah, I feel like maybe somebody younger would’ve been better. I’m sorry, no offense.”
“It’s alright, I don’t really mind.”
“I’m sorry,” she spoke. “I’ll try calling 5721-1253 instead. Bye-bye.”
In the end, I never found out about the amazing thing that happened in Bangkok.
