Wrench
The first young man whose collarbone Mayumi broke, drove a white GT-R with a spoiler.
She didn’t know his name. One Sunday, when she was taking a walk near her house, she
somehow ended up in his car, after being asked “Would you like to go for a drive?” He tried
to forcibly take her to a motel near Enoshima. So, before he could she picked up a nearby
wrench from the car and hit the man’s shoulder with all her might. There was a rattling sound
as his collarbone broke.
She jumped out of the car leaving behind the groaning and suffering man, and ran to the
nearby Odakyu station. Then when she tried to buy a ticket at an automatic ticket machine,
she realized that she was still holding a large wrench in her right hand. Everybody around
was staring suspiciously at her and the wrench in her hand. Seeing a beautiful young woman
holding a wrench about to get on the train, anybody would wonder, "What the heck?"
Feigning nonchalance, she put the wrench in her shoulder bag, and rode the train back home.
“I’ve been carrying this wrench in my bag ever since,” she said. “Of course, I don’t bring it
to parties or anything like that.”
“Hmmm,” I said, pretending it was nothing. “So, did you ever get a chance to use it after that?”
As she fixed her lipstick in the rear-view mirror, she replied, “Yes, twice. Once in a Datsun
Sports and the other in a Nissan 240sx. I wonder why it’s always Nissan cars?”
“Both times the collarbone?”
“Yeah, the collarbone is the easiest to hit. And it won’t kill them.”
“Oh,” I said, and inwardly groaned again. It must be very painful to have a broken collarbone.
Just thinking about it gives me chills.
“But,” she said as she closed her makeup bag with a click. “In this world, there are guys who
deserve to have their collarbone broken”
“I guess, that’s right,” I replied.
I guess that's right.
